​2020 was the year in which entertainment venues were shuttered, so few horses died on the track, few bulls died in the ring, and few of either species were zapped with electric prods so that they would buck at rodeos.
It was the year that animal shelters around the world were emptied as lonely people looked for companionship, many of whom will increasingly work from home and be able to attend to their new family members.
It was the year that millions of mink were killed, as always, but that plans to raise more were banned in numerous countries due to the danger of vaccine resistant Covid-19 mutations spreading to humans, allowing us to finally see the end of a vile industry on the near horizon.
It was the year that the dairy industry was discussed at the Oscars and in major mainstream media as a serious social justice issue.
It was the year that the first pieces of cell grown meat went on sale, a development more likely than any other to end the slaughter of billions of animals every year for the human food supply.
Most significantly for DawnWatch, it was the year in which we saw, in major mainstream media, repeated calls for a fundamental change in our relationships with other species; not slightly improved treatment but an overhaul.
